Two free poetry workshops for 18-30s

As part of our Community Engagement programme, the Charterhouse’s Young Community is excited to be partnering with the Poetry Society to invite audiences between the ages of 18-30 to two free writing workshops.

In this pair of workshops, led by poet Bristol’s City Poet Caleb Parkin, we will be drawing inspiration from the portraits in the Charterhouse’s historic Great Chamber, and we’ll create poems which explore clothing’s potential to empower and separate us. We’ll bring them to life in our writing, as well as uncover the rituals – past, present and future – of the Charterhouse itself. We look forward to welcoming participants with or without previous writing experience. All are welcome, and those not currently based in London should feel very free to join too. The first workshop is at 5.30pm Thursday 21st January, and the second at 5.30pm on Monday 25th January. Book your free place here.

We are delighted to be hosting a concert by the Aglica Trio, all graduates of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, performing music by Debussy, Debois, Takemitsu, Corelli and Mattias. The Aglica Trio comprises Carys Gittins on flute, Agnieszka Zyniewitz on viola and Lise Vandersmissen on harp.  Each has received personal acclaim, as well as support and tuition from prestigious artists since leaving Guildhall – and together they have created this programme which brings together their British, Polish and Belgian roots.  Free entry. Cloud of Unknowing: talk

Photographer George Miles is giving a talk about his work – Cloud of Unknowing – currently on display in the Norfolk Cloister. He will bee talking about his approach to photography: finding beauty and meaning in everyday places, being drawn back to certain places and making pictures to discover why.  He will talk about the ideas that formed around the work as he revisited the woods behind Beauvale Priory over the course of three years and the serendipitous connections that led to the show at the Charterhouse.  Free, no advance booking required.
