The Charterhouse is delighted to announce the appointment of the Revd Jennifer Midgley-Adam as our new Preacher.

Emerging from an exceptionally strong field of candidates, Jennifer officially joins the community today after being licensed by the Rt Revd Dr Emma Ineson, Acting Bishop of London.

Jennifer brings a wealth of experience to the Charterhouse. Upon completing her ministerial training at Ripon College Cuddesdon, she served her curacy at All Hallows-by-the-Tower before becoming Assistant Priest at St Peter’s, Eaton Square. She has also served as Chaplain to the City of London Sea Cadets and Royal Marine Cadets.

Peter Aiers, Master and Chief Executive at the Charterhouse, welcomed the appointment: “Jennifer joins us at a pivotal time as we increasingly look beyond the walls of the Charterhouse. Our focus is not only on continuing to provide a supportive community for our almshouse residents, but also on how we might support ageing in the wider community. We have great ambitions for the role of the Preacher to support our people, grow our worshipping community, and champion wider conversations around spirituality and ageing.”

Expressing her enthusiasm for the new role, Jennifer shared, “I am excited to be joining the Charterhouse and look forward to becoming an active part of its unique life and community, working alongside everyone who lives, works, and visits there.”

A Historic Role for a Modern Community

The role of the Preacher dates back to the original foundation of the Charterhouse by Thomas Sutton. Today, the Preacher plays a vital role in supporting the entire community, which includes individuals of all faiths and none.

Under Jennifer’s guidance, the historic Chapel will continue to be an active, welcoming place of worship for both residents and the public, hosting regular services and bringing music to life through our Choral Evensongs. Looking to the future, the Charterhouse will also continue to lead important explorations into the intersections of spirituality and ageing.
